Battle Against Discrimination

I just recently decided to publish my own mini magazine (printed 4 times a year) for the students at my college. I thought it would be fun to make it an extension of this new blog by calling it BAT as a shortening of a phrase, however, I could not find a word that meant sexism that started with a T. I knew I wanted it to be “Battle Against. . . ” and then it struck me that BAD (Battle Against Discrimination) would be a strong name. So BAD it is. Some times being BAD can feel pretty good, especially in a world that sees feminism as a negative thing.

I am working on finding writers that will represent all forms of feminists such as men, gay and lesbian feminists, and feminist from different cultural, educational, and racial back grounds. Expect the first issue to appear in January. I will continue to post updates.

Twilight Fans

Whether we notice it daily or not, sexism is a big issue in todays society. It is in film, advertising, music, and other areas of our daily lives. We are given messages that we have to fit into a submissive mold. We are portrayed as weak, as sex objects, and as possessions of men. And we buy into this idea every day with out even realizing it. Take for instance the Twilight series. While I admit I loved the books, after watching the movie I realized how negative the messages were in the story. Edward Cullen is a dangerous, yet seductive character. Girls looks for a romance like this with a dedicated man. But how romantic is this scenario really? Edward wants to kill Bella, he even tells her that he wants to kill her more than he has wanted to kill before. He stalks Bella, follows her when she is out with friends and even tells her that he is possessive of her, as if she belongs to him. Not only does he stalk her, but Edward creeps into her house and watches her while she sleeps. No woman in their right mind would want a man as dangerous and possessive as he is. Jonathan McIntosh’s short film montage humorously demonstrates Edward’s behavior in the negative way that it should be viewed, not romanticized and accepted like it is by the media.
